Description Another steampunk set novel, our main character Saphronia is a nuisance to her mother. On the recommendation of - I don't remember, a family friend? A nanny? I cant remember - someone, her mother ends up sending her away to finishing school. Saphronia doesn't want to go, but when she gets there she learns its not your average finishing school. Its a school to train ladies how to be spies.
Overall I enjoyed this book. It was suggested to me by my friend who is also a librarian. It has a fantastic and very humorous writing style, but the plot was very lacking. The entire time I'm reading it, and snickering to myself at the witty banter and descriptions, I'm left wondering where the story is going.
The names were AWFUL in this book. Saphronia? Mrs. Temminick? Sometimes, on the random times I feel like attempting to write a story, I'll try to make up names. If I don't, I'll just type a bunch of letters and try and make them a name, and thats what it feels like she does in this story with half the names. There are a few normal ones thrown in there (Mlle Geraldine for example), but most of them are ridiculous. Its almost like trying to read Anna Karenina and figuring out how to pronounce those Russian names.
But yes. Even though the plot was lacking and it would take me 10 minutes to figure out the names every time they came up, I still liked the book. I'm hoping the next one will have a better plot, but its not out yet so I dont know. I've also heard Gail Carriger writes adult fiction books, so I'm definitely going to check that out once I get through my huge stack of library books waiting for me.
So yeah, give it a read. Its funny and amusing.
